The Marc Cornelissen Brightlands Award as a symbol of innovation
Arnold Stokking is Brightsite's managing director. "Brightsite is a partnership of companies and knowledge institutes. We want to demonstrate that the chemical industry can achieve the climate targets set for 2030 and 2050. We do this by exploring, developing, and applying new technology at the Chemelot site. We also want to attract and train the talent needed to do this."
The climate targets require reducing the CO2 emissions at the Chemelot site, where Brightsite is located, by half by 2030. By 2050, the site must be CO2 neutral. Arnold: It is also essential to train the engineers of the future, to train the engineers of green chemistry. That is why Brightsite is working on new and improved education curriculums. This should help Chemelot become a magnet for sustainable technology and engineering talent for the new circular chemistry."
"Brightsite focuses on the electrification of processes by, for example, splitting methane into raw materials for the plastic and fertilizer chains under electrical conditions. Electricity is still relatively expensive compared to oil and natural gas and not sufficiently 'green'. But that is gradually improving because of the further charging of CO2 and the fact that more and more green electricity is becoming available. We also focus on chemical recycling processes, replacing petroleum with (reused) plastics and biomass. Data management, digitization, and artificial intelligence also help us save energy and optimize processes. Digitization is also playing an increasingly important role in safety; it is applied through text mining in various reports and sensory systems. These are some examples of Brightsite as an essential pillar for the further development of the Chemelot Circular Hub."

Innovation is leading
"Innovation is leading in Brightsite's activities. The Marc Cornelissen Brightlands Award is also a symbol of innovation. Marc Cornelissen was a shining example of people who take on the challenges of new paths. That is why we are one of the partners of this incentive prize for sustainability pioneers, a prize that we gladly put our name to. The award offers plenty of opportunities to point out the importance of a green and circular chemical industry to as many people as possible and to actively involve them in it. This applies in particular to the beta talents for whom the award is a direct source of inspiration. They strive to contribute to the 'greenifying' of the industry and thus preserve society."

"Do I have another sustainable tip for the Christmas period? Should we put up a sustainable Christmas tree with environmentally friendly decorations? I don't really know. Or actually, I do know. Sustainability also has everything to do with how you, as a human being, take care of yourself, physically and spiritually. Just as we need to take care of a sustainable society. So, in 2021, let's all focus on staying healthy. This is how human capital can reach its full potential, and sustainability can be shown in all its facets."
